Cinco
de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French
army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. General Ignacio Zaragoza
led the Mexican army to a victory over the French force that was better
armed and three times larger than the Mexican troops. Even though the
French troops later managed to gain control of Mexico City the French
withdrew in 1866 and 1867 because of resistance by many Mexicans and
pressure from the United States. |
