Vertebrates are interesting to study because they are animals that we know. Vertebrate animals have a backbone. The backbone is made up of ring-like bones (vertebrae) that protect the soft spinal cord. Maybe we find vertebrates interesting because we (humans) ARE vertebrates.

Vertebrates are also interesting because they are easy to find. We live with many other vertebrates and are often quite aware of them in our lives. We have pet dogs, cats, and birds, and have used horses as a means of transporation for
many years.

Can you think of other ways that humans share their lives with vertebrate animals?
